Many Americans slept through the worst of the disruptions, but the ripple effects hit globally. Cloudflare supplies tools that protect sites from cyberattacks and help content load quickly, so when it stumbles, large swaths of the internet start wobbling.

Investors noticed. Cloudflare shares fell about 3 percent in early trading as news of the outages spread.
